Facing Tibet is the city of Shangri-La in north-western Yunnan. It is the seat of government of the Dêqên Tibetan Autonomous District.
The name was changed in 2001 from the somewhat more complicated Tibetan Gyelthang or Zhongdian to the euphonious and world-famous "Shangri-La". Allegedly, to attract more tourists.
However, the fact that this name refers to the novel "Lost Horizon" by the British writer James Hilton robs this really beautiful part of Yunnan, with the Ganden Songtsenling monastery located there, a bit of its mysticism.
