Mayan life in Guatemala and the natural paradise of Belize

"It's Sunday.

The mood of the small town, steeped in Spanish colonial splendor, is totally transformed. Already the night before, people had come from dozens of villages in the area - all descendants of the Maya.

Since early morning, they have been standing all over the old town, behind self-constructed stalls, offering the goods they brought from their villages.

Wandering between their friendly gazes, I stop to sample some of the still-warm bread and taste the coffee - the best I've ever enjoyed.

Then I catch sight of an adobe house, just a single ray of light finding its way in through the open door, settling with warm colors on a woman and her pottery. I ask her if I may take a photo. She agrees with a friendly smile - a picture I will never forget."

This impartiality and friendliness towards the visitor, these incidents that leave an unforgettable impression, you will surely find only in a few places left on our planet. One of them is Central America.

GUATEMALA

In Guatemala, one of the most magnificent colonial cities in Latin America - Antigua - awaits you right at the beginning of your trip.

The old capital of the country seems to take the visitor back to another time. Thus, you are constantly surrounded by monasteries and other institutions of the Catholic Church.

But if you look closely, you will notice that these respectful buildings are hotels in monastery garb. Just to spend some time in these impressive walls makes a visit to this beautiful city worthwhile.

Guatemala is also the land of volcanoes. Three of the thirty-three volcanoes are reflected in Lake Atitlan, the next destination of the trip.

Santiago de Atitlan is reached after a short boat ride across the lake. The view of the surrounding volcanoes is spectacular. When you then land in Santiago, you immediately feel transported back many years.

Very old churches, shamans and many mystical rites will make your heart beat faster.

Be a little curious before the journey continues to Chichicastenango, where you will be awaited by probably the most colorful market in all of Central America.

Secluded in the north of the country, in the middle of the jungle region of Petén, you will find Tikal, one of the most important Mayan ruins. When you climb one of the pyramids, you will feel why this is a sacred place of the Maya.

Not far from Tikal lies the border to Belize.

The tropical rainforest with its immense variety of species has nowhere been preserved as coherently as in this small country.

Contrast this with one of the most fascinating coral reefs in the world - the Belize Barrier Reef with the legendary "Blue Hole". This diving paradise is still an insider tip for us in Europe.

The combination of tropical rainforest vegetation and Caribbean flair makes the charm of this country.

Matching the dreamlike natural treasures we have selected special accommodations for you, which will make your stay an unforgettable experience: In the mountainous region, just over the border with Guatemala near San Ignacio, you will stay at the multiple award-winning Chaa Creek Cottages or at Blancaneaux Lodge, owned by director Francis Ford Coppola. Both lodgings are built on beautiful riverscapes.

Fill your day with canoeing, horseback riding, and bird watching tours, or just let nature's charms ignite your senses. In the evening, enjoy the sunset in front of your bungalow and listen to the sounds of wildlife.

Watch as toucans, parrots and other bird species fly to their roosts against the backdrop of the mountain forests and end the day with a cocktail.

Awakened by bird calls and fortified with a delicious breakfast, you will then head directly to the Caribbean Sea to Ambergris Caye.
